A Call for ChangeIn April of 2003 a local community resident asked for support in removing a drug house located next door to her sister’s home in Ferndale, MI. Mary Ann Solberg, Director for the Troy Community Coalition, suggested she garner support from concerned citizens in her community to form a community drug prevention coalition. SEOC was officially formed in September of 2003.
The SEOC partnered with Ferndale Public School District (FPSD) to apply for the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program grant. As the legal applicant, FPSD was awarded the DFC grant for 2010-2015. The coalition continues to operate with county substance abuse prevention funds provided by the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities (ACHC) and in-kind donations. Since 2010, over 3,500 youth have pledged to live drug-free, 150 tobacco compliance checks have occurred, 27 bars received TIPS Training, 80 parents received parenting training and more than 10,000 information materials have been distributed. |
